Understanding Senegal's University System
Senegal has one of the most developed higher education systems in West Africa. It operates on the LMD model (Licence-Master-Doctorat), aligned with the European Bologna system — which means Senegalese degrees are recognized across Francophone Africa and increasingly in Europe.
The system divides into two worlds: a large public university sector anchored by UCAD, and a rapidly growing private sector strong in business and technology. For international students, the choice depends primarily on language (almost everything is in French), discipline, budget, and whether you want a degree recognized primarily in Africa or globally.
Dakar is the academic capital. But Senegal also has significant universities in Saint-Louis (Gaston Berger), Thiès, Ziguinchor, and the new urban hub of Diamniadio.
