Understanding Dakar's Neighborhoods for International residents

Dakar is a compact city but its neighborhoods feel very different from each other. Choosing the right area will define your daily life — proximity to the sea, to coworking spaces, to schools, to the airport. Here is an honest overview of the main areas where International residents live.

Premium International residents Area
700–1,200 EUR

Almadies

Almadies is the most popular area for International residents, diplomats, and affluent Dakarois. It sits on the western tip of the Cap-Vert peninsula, with ocean views and beach access. The neighborhood is clean, safe, and well-maintained

Le Plateau is the historic downtown — Dakar's business heart. Close to government buildings, the port, and public transport hubs. Older building stock, more urban noise, and heavier traffic. Rent is moderate.

Downtown
300–600 EUR

Plateau

Mermoz and Sacre-Coeur are residential neighborhoods popular with middle-class Senegalese families and International residents who want a local feel without the tourist-area markup.

N'Gor and Yoff are beach communities north of Almadies, with a more relaxed fishing village atmosphere. Very popular with digital nomads and long-term International residents who value proximity to the sea and a slower pace.

Step 02

Visit Apartments

Use our verified agencies directory (link below), International residents Facebook groups, and Dakar property sites. Consider hiring a concierge to search on your behalf if you are not yet in the country

Step 03

Negotiate Price

Apartments are rarely rented sight-unseen by serious landlords. Plan a 1-2 week exploratory trip, or use a trusted local intermediary.

Step 04

Check the Lease

Prices are often negotiable, especially for longer leases. Do not accept the first price offered. Paying 6-12 months upfront can unlock a 10-20% discount

Step 05

Pay Deposit

Ask for a written lease (contrat de bail). It should specify: rent amount, payment schedule, deposit, duration, and maintenance responsibilities. Have it reviewed if you are not comfortable in French.

Step 06

Document Condition

Standard is 2-3 months rent as a security deposit (caution). Get a receipt for every payment.

Relocation Guide

Understanding the Relocation Process to Senegal

Understanding the Dakar Rental Market

Dakar offers a wide variety of housing options, from furnished studios and modern apartments to family villas and serviced residences. Rental prices vary significantly depending on location, amenities, security and proximity to the coast.

Most landlords require a security deposit equivalent to two or three months’ rent. Furnished apartments are common and can be a practical option for someone relocating before committing to a long-term lease.

Demand is highest in popular neighborhoods such as Almadies, Ngor and Mermoz, so it’s recommended to begin your search several weeks before your planned move.

Best Neighborhoods in Dakar

Each neighborhood offers a different lifestyle and budget. Choosing the right area depends on your priorities, commute, family needs and preferred amenities.

Almadies
Premium coastal area with restaurants, embassies and modern housing.
Ngor
Popular beachside neighborhood with a relaxed atmosphere.
Mermoz
Central location with excellent access to schools and services.

Renting Safely & Avoiding Common Mistakes

Before signing any lease agreement, verify the landlord’s identity and carefully review all rental terms. If possible, visit the property in person or arrange a virtual viewing before making any payments.

Avoid sending deposits for properties that cannot be verified and ask for written receipts for all payments. Utility charges, internet costs and maintenance fees should also be clarified in advance.

Working with trusted local agents or relocation specialists can help reduce risk and save valuable time during your housing search.
