The primary transport for International residents. Always negotiate the price before getting in — there are no meters. Standard in-city fare: 1,000-3,000 XOF (1.50-4.50 EUR) depending on distance and time of day. Night surcharge applies. Bolt and Yango (ride-hailing apps) operate in Dakar with fixed prices — recommended for reliability and fair pricing.

Public bus network covering most of the city. Very affordable (200-300 XOF per trip) but crowded and slower. Good once you know the routes.

Shared taxis running fixed routes between neighborhoods and to other cities. Affordable and reliable for inter-city travel.

Recommended for families and those in outer neighborhoods. Traffic in Dakar can be severe, especially on the VDN (main expressway) during rush hours. Parking is generally available. Fuel is relatively affordable. A small used car can be purchased for 3,000-8,000 EUR.

Operating between Dakar and Goree Island. Also used by fishermen — not a regular commuter option but a unique experience.

Marche Sandaga (Plateau) — the largest central market. Everything from fabric to electronics to food. Expect negotiation. Marche HLM — fabric, clothing, and tailoring. Marche Kermel (downtown) — fresh produce, spices, flowers. More organized and slightly higher prices. Marche Colobane — second-hand goods, spare parts, eclectic.

Casino (Almadies, Plateau), Auchan (multiple locations), City Dia (various). Stock a mix of French imports and local products. Prices similar to French supermarkets for imported goods, very affordable for local produce.

Thieboudienne (fish and rice — national dish), yassa poulet (chicken in onion-lemon sauce), mafe (peanut stew), thiebou yapp (meat and rice). A solid meal at a local restaurant: 1,500-3,000 XOF (~2-5 EUR). Street food (sandwiches, dibi grilled meat): 500-1,500 XOF.

French is the official language and is used in business, administration, and formal education. Wolof is the true national language — spoken by 80%+ of the population across all ethnic groups. Learning even 10-20 Wolof phrases will transform your experience. Key phrases: Nanga def? (How are you?) / Mangui fi rekk (I am fine) / Jerejeef (Thank you) / Waaw (Yes) / Deedeet (No) / Baal ma (Excuse me).

Senegal is approximately 95% Muslim, predominantly Sufi. Religion is central to daily life but practiced with notable tolerance and openness. During Ramadan, expect altered business hours and a different social rhythm. Dress modestly in markets and religious areas.

Greetings are important — always greet before asking anything. Handshakes are standard. Right hand for eating and giving/receiving. Patience is essential — timekeeping is flexible by European standards.
